Take a trip back in time with this ancient sundial project. The kids will be amazed at how people were able to tell the time of day simply by placing a stick in the ground and tracking the movement of shadows.  Enjoy the sun!

Number of players:

What you need

Rocks or chalk
Watch or clock

Choose a sunny spot outside in the garden or yard.

Put the stick in the ground.

As each hour passes during the day, place a rock, or mark with chalk for each hour to show where the shadow falls at that time.

Mark as many hours as you can and mark out the rest using the space between each measured hour as indicators to where each marker goes.

Your sundial is ready to use.

To read the time, look for the shadow and read the corresponding number!
