BRIEF:

To write an engagement programme, to be delivered in schools by teachers, which assists in the activity levels of children whilst also measurably improving fitness levels.

PROJECT:

The Fitness For Life programme, was written from scratch and links to 7 industry recognised fitness assessments for children. The programme was written to be simple for teachers to deliver 5-days per week for 20-minutes per day. Sessions plans and interactive resources (via an iPad app and video content) have been developed for Key Stage 1 and 2 curriculums.

The Fitness For Life pilot took place in 5 schools over a 6-week period during the summer of 2013. Funded by Lewisham District Council, the iKidz team trained 16 teachers to deliver the programme before completing fitness assessments on over 300 children both at the beginning and end of the 6-week pilot.

82% of participants saw an equal or improved assessment result at the end of the 6-week programme with average scores improving by 11% points. Additional benefits highlighted by schools included, higher concentration levels, better behaviour and lower absenteeism.

The programme has achieved funding for an extended pilot of 25 schools from October 2013 with plans to roll out nationally in 2014. iKidz Training and Consultancy are managing the training and assessments for the extended pilot within the Lewisham borough.
